Bathroom Fittings Finish Guide: Chrome vs Black Matt vs Gold vs Rose Gold
Chrome is the durable all-rounder; black matt and gold are PVD finishes that resist tarnish but need gentle care. Compare durability, look and maintenance before you choose.

Short answer
If you want fittings that look good after ten years of Indian tap water and daily cleaning, chrome is still the safest choice — it's also the cheapest, with the widest range. Black matt costs about 46% more than the same Jaquar model in chrome, PVD gold about 72% more, and full gold plating can be 2.5–3x the chrome price. Coloured finishes are tougher than they used to be, but they punish harsh cleaners and hard-water spotting shows up faster on dark surfaces.
In detail
What finishes are actually available
Across the 5,600+ bath fittings we stock from ten brands, chrome accounts for more than a third of all products — every series comes in chrome, and every other finish is a subset. In the Jaquar range specifically, the finish families and their catalog depth look like this:
The three-letter finish code sits in the middle of every Jaquar model number — KUP-BLM-35011BPM is the black matt version of KUP-CHR-35011BPM. Our model code guide decodes the full format.
One honest availability note: Jaquar does not offer a rose gold finish in our catalog. If rose gold is the brief, it comes from other brands we stock — Kohler has the deepest rose gold range (80+ items), followed by Cera, Hindware and Parryware. Example: the Hindware Edge rose gold basin mixer (F520011RGD) at ₹6,600.
What each finish costs: same model, different coat
The clearest way to see finish premiums is one model across its finishes. The Jaquar Kubix Prime deck-mounted basin mixer (model 35011BPM):
That pattern holds across the range. Comparing every Jaquar model that exists in chrome plus another finish, the median premiums are:
So a black bathroom costs roughly one and a half times a chrome one in fittings alone, and a gold one can cost double or more — worth knowing before the mood board is locked.
Durability and care, finish by finish
Chrome. Electroplated, hard, and forgiving. It tolerates regular household cleaning better than any coloured finish and shows scratches least. Hard-water spots are visible but wipe off easily; a soft cloth and mild soap solution keep it new. If your building runs on borewell or tanker water — common across Mumbai and most Indian cities — chrome is the finish that shrugs it off. More on that in our hard-water faucet guide.
Black matt and black chrome. Modern coloured finishes on quality fittings are PVD (physical vapour deposition) or advanced coating processes — far more scratch- and tarnish-resistant than old painted finishes. The catch is not the coating, it's what lands on it: white hard-water spots are most visible on a flat black surface, and acidic or abrasive cleaners (harpic-type toilet cleaners, scouring powder, rough pads) will dull or strip any coloured finish. Wipe dry after use and clean only with diluted mild soap.
Gold and rose gold. PVD gold is genuinely durable — it resists tarnish far better than traditional gold electroplating — but the same gentle-care rule applies, and the visual stakes are higher: a patchy gold tap looks worse than a patchy chrome one. Treat full gold / gold dust finishes as premium decor items: soft cloth only, never anything acidic, and dry-wipe after installation of the habit, not just the tap.
Brushed metals (stainless steel, graphite). The practical middle ground for dark-finish lovers: brushed textures hide water spots and fingerprints much better than either mirror chrome or flat black, at a 67% typical premium.
Matching finishes across the bathroom
Buy the basin mixer, shower fittings, health faucet and accessories in the same finish and same brand's finish name — "black matt" from two brands rarely matches under the same light. Jaquar's coloured finishes run across most of its series, so you can do an entire bathroom in one tone: see the Kubix Prime, Vignette Prime and Alive ranges. Also confirm every piece you need actually exists in your finish before committing — chrome has 670 Jaquar items, gold PVD has 49.
Our recommendation
- Rental flats, family bathrooms, hard-water buildings: chrome. Cheapest, toughest, easiest to maintain.
- Design-led master bath with softened or municipal water: black matt or graphite, with a strict no-acid-cleaner rule for the housekeeping.
- Statement powder room: gold PVD — small space, few fittings, so the 72%+ premium stays affordable.
Every finish we sell ships pan-India (free above ₹2,000) with a GST invoice, prepaid checkout, and free replacement within 7 days for damaged, defective or wrongly shipped items.
