A waste coupling is the metal fitting in the bottom of your basin or sink; a bottle trap is the curved unit below it that holds water and blocks drain smell. You need both, they are almost always sold separately from the basin and the tap, and buying them as an afterthought is why so many otherwise-good bathrooms smell. Budget ₹650 – ₹2,220 for a waste coupling and ₹1,890 – ₹5,610 for a bottle trap in Jaquar; Cera and Essco start lower, Kohler goes higher. Match the finish to your taps, and pick the trap length to suit the gap between your basin and the wall outlet — 7, 10 and 12 inch are the common sizes.

What each part actually does
Waste coupling (also called a waste, or a basin waste) sits in the drain hole of the basin or sink. It seals against the ceramic or steel with a washer and provides the threaded outlet the trap screws onto.
Bottle trap is the cylindrical unit below. Its shape holds a permanent plug of water — the "water seal" — which is the only thing between your bathroom and the smell of the drain line. It also catches rings and earrings before they reach the stack, which is why it unscrews.
Without a trap, or with a trap that has dried out, sewer gas comes straight up through the basin. This is the single commonest cause of a bathroom that smells despite being clean.
Types of waste coupling
With or without overflow. Look at your basin: if it has a small overflow slot near the rim, you need a waste coupling with an overflow channel so that slot connects. If there is no slot, use a without-overflow waste. Fitting the wrong one either blocks the overflow or leaks through an unused channel.
Length matters on sinks. Kitchen sinks are thicker at the drain than basins, and waste couplings come in lengths — we stock 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 inch versions across brands. A too-short waste will not reach through a thick sink deck.
Bottle trap sizes
Bottle traps are quoted by length — the distance the outlet arm reaches toward the wall.
Measure from the centre of the basin drain to the wall outlet before ordering. If the trap is too short, the arm will not reach; too long and it will foul the wall or force an ugly angle.
Pedestal and half-pedestal basins hide the trap; wall-hung basins do not. If your trap will be visible, it is worth matching the finish to your taps properly — a chrome trap under black matt taps is very visible.

The mistakes we see most
Buying the basin and tap but not the waste and trap. They are separate purchases. Plan for roughly ₹2,500 – ₹8,000 per basin position on top of the basin and tap.
Wrong overflow type. Check the basin for an overflow slot first.
Mismatched finish. In a wall-hung basin the trap is fully visible. Buy it in the same finish and ideally the same brand as the taps.
A trap that dries out. In a guest bathroom used twice a year, the water seal evaporates and the smell returns. Run the tap for thirty seconds once a month, or pour a mug of water down each unused drain.
Using a flexible pipe instead of a proper trap. A corrugated flexi-waste is cheap and it "works", but the ribs catch hair and grease and it is far harder to clean. A proper bottle trap unscrews in seconds.
Fitting notes
- Seal the waste coupling to the basin with the supplied washers, and use plumber's putty or silicone under the flange.
- Do not over-tighten — porcelain cracks and steel sinks distort.
- Hand-tighten trap connections. These joints seal on a compression washer, not on force.
- After fitting, fill the basin and let it drain fully while you watch the joints. Slow seeps only show under a full load.
