Kitchen Sink Buying Guide (India): Size, Material & Bowl Layout

Short answer

Choose a kitchen sink in this order: size first, material second, bowl layout third, everything else after. Measure your counter cut-out and cabinet width before you look at a single photo — a 24-inch base cabinet cannot take a 34-inch sink, and that one number eliminates most of the catalogue for you. Then pick the material: stainless steel if you want the cheapest, toughest, most repairable option (Nirali sinks from ₹1,692), or quartz/composite if you want colour, a quieter sink and a premium look (Nirali quartz from ₹7,846). Finally choose single vs double bowl based on whether you wash by hand or use a dishwasher. Budget realistically: a good Indian kitchen sink lands between ₹8,000 and ₹25,000 fitted.

In detail

Step 1 — Measure before you shop

Almost every sink return we see is a sizing mistake, not a quality complaint. Three measurements decide everything:

The rule that saves people: the sink's outer dimension must be about 2 inches narrower than the internal cabinet width. A 34 x 20 in sink needs roughly a 36 in cabinet. If you are replacing a sink in existing granite, your new sink must be the same size or larger — granite cannot be filled back in.

Step 2 — Pick the material

Two materials cover essentially the entire Indian market, and we stock both.

Neither is "better" — they fail differently. Steel dents but survives anything thermal; quartz resists scratches and looks far better in an open kitchen, but a dropped cast-iron pan can chip the rim. The quartz vs stainless steel comparison works through this properly with prices.

Step 3 — Choose the bowl layout

In our own catalogue the split is telling: 197 of 326 Nirali sinks are without drainboard, 127 with — and single bowl outsells double comfortably. Big single bowls have won in India because a 5-litre cooker does not fit in half a double sink. More on this in single vs double bowl.

Step 4 — Installation type

• Top-mount (drop-in): the rim sits on the counter. Cheapest to fit, works with any counter, easy to replace later. The default for most Indian kitchens.
• Under-mount: fixed beneath the counter for a seamless wipe-in edge. Needs solid granite/quartz counter and skilled fitting.
• Flush-mount: rim sits level with the counter. The most expensive and least forgiving to install.

Step 5 — The details that actually matter

Steel gauge / thickness. Thicker steel is quieter and dents less. Franke publishes 1 mm thickness in AISI 304 (18/8) grade on its Box ranges — that is the benchmark to compare against. Thin, unbranded steel sounds tinny the moment water hits it.

AISI 304 grade. This is the standard for kitchen sinks — 18% chromium, 8% nickel, the "18/8" you see stamped in specs. It is what resists rust in Indian water. Avoid anything that will not state its grade.

Sound dampening. Good steel sinks carry pads underneath. Nirali's Silent Square range (₹4,875 – ₹37,222) is built specifically around this.

What to budget, realistically

Which brand?

Nirali is the Indian specialist with by far the widest size and price coverage — if you have an unusual cut-out, Nirali probably has a size that fits.
