Kitchen Sink Size Guide (India): Standard Sizes & What Fits

Short answer

The single number that decides your sink size is the internal width of the base cabinet — your sink must be about 2 inches narrower than it. A 24-inch cabinet takes a sink up to roughly 22 inches wide; a 36-inch cabinet takes up to about 34 inches. The most common Indian kitchen sink sizes are 24 x 18, 21 x 18, 34 x 20 and 36 x 20 inches, with 45 x 20 the standard for double-bowl and drainboard models. Bowl depth of 8–9 inches suits Indian cooking; anything shallower will splash when you fill a large vessel. If you are replacing a sink in existing granite, you can only go the same size or larger — never smaller.

Take the cabinet measurement inside the carcass, not across the shutter. The 2-inch allowance is for the sink's rim to land on solid counter with the mounting clips underneath.

Matching sink size to cabinet width

Depth: the measurement people forget

Bowl depth decides whether your sink splashes. For Indian cooking:

• 8–9 inches is the sweet spot. Deep enough to fill a pressure cooker without the tap spraying back at you, shallow enough that you are not bending over it.
• Under 7 inches looks elegant but splashes badly the moment you fill anything tall.
• Over 10 inches is comfortable for big vessels but you will feel it in your back after a while, especially if your counter is on the higher side.

If your household regularly washes 5-litre cookers and large tawas, prioritise depth over length.

Drainboard: add 12–18 inches to your plan

A drainboard is a sloped section beside the bowl. It is genuinely useful if you have no separate drying counter, but it makes the sink much longer — a 24 x 18 bowl with a drainboard becomes roughly a 37 x 18 unit.

In our catalogue 197 Nirali models are without drainboard and 127 with — so it is a real split, not a niche. Measure your counter run before deciding: a drainboard that forces the sink hard against the hob side is worse than no drainboard.

Single, double and 1.5 bowl by size

The mistake to avoid: forcing a double bowl into a 30-inch space. You end up with two bowls that each fit a plate and nothing else. A single bowl at that width is far more useful. See single vs double bowl.

Replacing an existing sink

You can go larger or identical, never smaller. Granite and quartz counters cannot be filled back in, so if your new sink is even half an inch narrower than the cut-out, the rim will not land on solid stone.

Measure the cut-out itself, not the old sink — the sink's rim overlaps the hole. If you are unsure, measure the visible bowl opening and add the rim width on each side.

Going larger is usually possible but needs a fabricator to re-cut the granite, which is a chargeable, dusty, on-site job. Factor it in before you fall in love with a bigger sink.

Sizes by what you cook

• Small household, mostly light cooking: 21 x 18 or 24 x 18 single bowl.
• Standard Indian family kitchen: 34 x 20 or 36 x 20 large single bowl — fits a cooker body and a tawa at once.
• Heavy cooking, joint family, or lots of hand-washing: 41 x 20 or 45 x 20, single bowl with drainboard or double bowl.
• Utility, servant kitchen, pantry, bar: 19 x 16, 16 x 14 or the 12 x 12 pantry sinks.
