Single vs Double Bowl Kitchen Sink - Which Is Right for India?

Short answer

For most Indian kitchens, a large single bowl is the better choice. Indian cooking uses big vessels — pressure cooker bodies, kadais, tawas, idli stands — and half of a double bowl usually cannot take them. A single bowl at 34 x 20 inches gives you one genuinely usable space instead of two cramped ones. Choose a double bowl only if you have 34 inches or more of sink width to spare and you hand-wash in two stages (soak on one side, rinse on the other). A 1.5 bowl is the sensible compromise where width is tight: a full-size main bowl plus a small side bowl for rinsing vegetables. Below 32 inches of width, do not attempt a double bowl at all.

Why single bowl won in India

Twenty years ago every Indian kitchen had a double-bowl sink. Today the large single bowl outsells it comfortably, and the reason is vessel size. A 5-litre pressure cooker body, a large kadai or an idli stand simply does not fit into a 16-inch half-bowl — you end up washing it in the sink's corner at an angle, splashing water over the counter.

A single bowl also gives you flat, uninterrupted bottom space. When you are soaking a stack of dishes after a family meal, one big bowl holds substantially more than two small ones of the same total width, because you lose the divider and both bowls' side walls.

Direct comparison

When a double bowl genuinely makes sense

Do not rule it out — there are households where it is clearly right:

• You hand-wash everything in two stages. Soapy water on one side, clean rinse on the other, with no running tap in between. If this is how your kitchen already works, a double bowl saves water and time.
• Two people work at the sink at once. Common in joint families where one person washes while another cleans vegetables.
• You want to keep vegetarian and non-vegetarian washing separate. A real requirement in many Indian homes, and a double bowl handles it cleanly.
• You have 40+ inches of width. At 45 x 20 inches, both bowls are full-size and the objection above disappears entirely. This is why 45 x 20 is our most-stocked size with 31 models.

The 1.5 bowl compromise

A 1.5 bowl has one full-depth main bowl and a smaller, often shallower, side bowl. It is the right answer more often than people expect:

• The main bowl still takes a cooker or kadai.
• The small bowl is genuinely useful for rinsing dal, washing coriander, or parking a colander.
• It fits in 32–36 inches where a true double bowl would need 40+.

The limitation: the small bowl is for rinsing, not soaking. Do not buy a 1.5 expecting the second bowl to hold dishes.

With or without drainboard

This is a separate decision from bowl count, and it changes the length of the sink considerably.

A drainboard is a sloped, ribbed section that drains back into the bowl. It keeps washed vessels off your counter, which matters a lot in a small kitchen. But a 24 x 18 bowl with a drainboard becomes roughly a 37 x 18 unit — measure your counter run before committing.

A practical way to decide

Stand at your current sink and ask: in the last week, how many times did I actually use both halves at once? For most households the honest answer is "rarely" — the second bowl becomes a place where the dish rack lives. If that is you, take the same width as a single bowl and enjoy the extra space.

If the answer is "constantly, that is how I wash", buy the double bowl — but give it at least 40 inches so both halves are usable.
