Kitchen Sink Installation Types: Top-Mount vs Under-Mount vs Flush-Mount
Top-mount suits around 80% of Indian kitchens - cheapest to fit, works with any counter. Under-mount needs solid stone and a skilled fabricator. Here is how to choose.

Short answer
Top-mount (drop-in) is the right choice for around 80% of Indian kitchens — the sink's rim rests on the counter, it works with any counter material, it is the cheapest to fit and the easiest to replace in ten years. Choose under-mount only if you have a solid granite or engineered-quartz counter and want a seamless edge you can sweep crumbs straight into; it costs more to fit and needs a fabricator who has done it before. Flush-mount (rim level with the counter) is the most expensive and least forgiving — beautiful when done well, visibly wrong when the fabrication is even slightly off. If you are replacing a sink in an existing counter, you are almost always keeping the same type.
In detail
The three types
Top-mount: the default, and usually the right one
The sink drops into a cut-out and its rim overlaps the counter by an inch or so. Silicone under the rim seals it; clips underneath pull it down.
Why it dominates in India: it tolerates imperfect cut-outs. Granite fabrication on site is rarely millimetre-perfect, and the overlapping rim hides a multitude of small sins. It also lets you replace a sink later without touching the stone, as long as the new one is the same size or larger.
The one real downside: the raised rim collects grime along its silicone line, and you cannot sweep water and crumbs directly from counter to sink. Keep the silicone bead clean and it is a non-issue for years.

Under-mount: worth it on stone counters
The sink is fixed beneath the counter, so the stone's cut edge is what you see. Nothing interrupts the surface.
Why people choose it: you can sweep everything straight into the bowl. It looks markedly more expensive, and in an open kitchen it is the detail people notice.
What it demands:
- A solid counter — granite or engineered quartz. It cannot be done on tile or laminate.
- A polished cut-out edge, because that edge is now visible.
- A fabricator who has fitted under-mounts before. The sink hangs from the stone, so the support has to be right.
- More attention to the silicone seal, since it is doing more work.

Flush-mount: the specialist option
The sink's rim finishes exactly level with the counter, set into a rebate cut into the stone. Done properly it is the cleanest look available.
Done imperfectly, it is the most obvious. The tolerance is tight, the stone rebate has to be machined accurately, and if the levels are out by a millimetre you will see and feel it every day. It is also the hardest to replace later.
Only worth pursuing with a fabricator who can show you flush-mount work they have already completed.
Which to choose, by situation
New kitchen, granite or quartz counter, open plan, budget available: under-mount. It is the upgrade you will notice daily.
New kitchen, standard budget, closed kitchen: top-mount. Put the money you save into a bigger or better sink instead.
Replacing a sink in an existing counter: match what you have. Converting top-mount to under-mount means re-polishing the cut edge — a chargeable, dusty on-site job, and not always possible depending on how the original cut-out was finished.
Tile or laminate counter: top-mount. The others are not an option.
Rental or resale property: top-mount. Cheaper, and the next owner can swap it easily.
What fitting involves, practically
Whichever type you pick, plan for:
- A plumber, and for stone work a fabricator. These are often two different people. Under-mount and flush-mount need both.
- The waste coupling and bottle trap, bought separately. Budget ₹650 – ₹2,220 for a Jaquar waste coupling and ₹1,890 – ₹5,610 for a bottle trap. See waste couplings and bottle traps.
- Tap hole position. Decide before the stone is cut. A deck-mounted kitchen mixer needs a hole either in the sink's ledge or in the counter behind it.
- Silicone, not putty. A good neutral-cure silicone bead is what keeps water out of your cabinet.
One thing worth getting right
Whatever the mounting type, make sure the cabinet beneath is sound and the sink is properly supported. The commonest failure we hear about is not the sink at all — it is a chipboard cabinet base that swelled after a slow leak at the waste coupling. Check that joint after a week of use.
