Kitchen Faucet Buying Guide (India): Mixer, Pull-Out & Sink Cock

Short answer

For most Indian kitchens, a deck-mounted single-lever sink mixer with a swivel spout is the right choice, and ₹4,000 – ₹8,000 buys a good one. Upgrade to a pull-out or pull-down spray (from about ₹8,000) if you regularly wash large vessels — being able to direct water into a cooker body rather than manoeuvring the cooker under a fixed spout is the single biggest day-to-day improvement available in a kitchen tap. Check two things before buying: whether your sink has a tap hole or the tap mounts on the counter behind it, and whether you have a hot water line — a single-lever mixer needs both hot and cold, while a sink cock is cold-only and much cheaper. Mixer or sink cock — check your plumbing first

This decides everything else.

• Sink mixer: two inlets, hot and cold, blended by one lever. Needs a hot water line at the sink. This is what most modern Indian kitchens fit.
• Sink cock / sink tap: one inlet, cold only. Cheaper, simpler, and still very common in kitchens with no geyser line.

If there is no hot water pipe under your sink, a mixer is pointless — you will pay for a second inlet you cannot use. Adding a hot line later means opening the wall or running a surface pipe from the nearest geyser.

Spout types, and which to pick

The pull-out is the upgrade that actually changes your day. A fixed spout means lifting a full cooker body up and under it. A pull-out means bringing the water to the vessel where it sits. If you cook in large quantities, this is worth the money more than any finish or brand.

Spout height and reach matter. A tall spout clears large vessels but splashes more in a shallow bowl. If your sink is 8 inches deep or more, a taller spout is comfortable. In a shallow sink, keep it lower.

Finish: chrome unless you have a reason

Chrome is the durable, easy-care all-rounder and by far the most common. Black is the popular alternative — Franke offers its Novara Plus in black at ₹5,192, a ₹560 premium over the chrome. Stainless steel finishes suit a steel sink well; Franke's EOS Neo range is finished this way.

The care trade-off is real: PVD and painted finishes resist tarnish but need gentle cleaning, no abrasives and no acidic descaler. In a kitchen — where you are dealing with oil daily — chrome is the lower-maintenance choice. Our finish guide covers durability and care across finishes.

Hard water: what to look for

Most of Mumbai and much of urban India runs hard water, which scales up aerators and cartridges.

• Ceramic cartridge, not a rubber washer. Standard on any decent single-lever mixer and far more scale tolerant.
• A removable aerator. You will want to unscrew and soak it in dilute citric acid every few months. If the aerator does not come off, scale becomes permanent.
• Silicone or anti-scale nozzles on spray heads, so deposits rub off with a thumb.

Installation: what you also need

• Check the tap hole. Many kitchen sinks come with a pre-punched ledge hole; many do not, in which case the tap mounts in the counter behind the sink and the hole must be drilled before the granite is fitted.
• Angle valves / stop cocks. A deck mixer needs two inlet connections. Budget ₹495 – ₹4,710 depending on brand — see basin area faucets.
• Braided inlet hoses. Usually supplied; replace them rather than reuse old ones.
