What Size Geyser Do I Need? Capacity Guide (India, 2026)

Short answer

For one bathroom with a shower, buy 25 litres. For one bathroom used for bucket baths, 15 litres. For a kitchen sink only, 6–10 litres. Two bathrooms sharing one geyser needs 35–50 litres, and a whole flat on a single central unit needs 70 litres or more. The mistake almost everybody makes is buying 15 litres for a shower because it is about ₹1,500 cheaper than 25 — and then running out of hot water every winter morning for the next eight years. Wattage does not fix an undersized tank; only a bigger tank does.

In detail

How much hot water each thing actually uses

A geyser's litre rating is the tank volume, not how much usable hot water you get. Because cold water enters as you draw hot out, you get roughly 1.5× the tank capacity at a comfortable mixed temperature before it turns tepid. A 15 litre tank set to 60 °C gives you about 22 litres of usable warm water.

Against that:

A standard overhead shower flows 8–12 litres a minute. Do that arithmetic once and the case for 25 litres over 15 makes itself.

The recommendation, by home

Studio or 1BHK, one bathroom, bucket bath. 15 litres. The 15 litre Celo Vertical (ask the price on WhatsApp) at ₹8,129 is 5-star rated and the sensible default.

1BHK or 2BHK, one bathroom, shower. 25 litres. This is the single most common right answer in Mumbai and the one people most often get wrong.

2BHK, two bathrooms. Two 15–25 litre units, one per bathroom — not one big one. Two smaller geysers beat one large shared unit almost every time: shorter pipe runs mean less heat lost on the way and no waiting for hot water to travel, and if one fails you still have a hot shower. It usually costs about the same.

3BHK and up, or a bathtub. 35–50 litres for the master bathroom, 15–25 for the others.

Whole flat on one central geyser. 70 litres and up — the Venus Magma Plus (ask the price on WhatsApp) range, ₹25,779 to ₹46,999, or the Jaquar Versa (ask the price on WhatsApp) 70 or 100 litre at ₹17,300 or ₹19,650. Only worth it if the plumbing was designed for a central system; retrofitting one is rarely economic.

Kitchen only. 6 litres, or an instant. Never put a 25 litre tank on a kitchen sink — you will pay to keep 25 litres hot for a job that needs eight.

When to buy instant instead

An instant geyser holds 1–5 litres and heats it in a couple of minutes. Right for:

• A kitchen tap
• A servant or guest bathroom used a few times a week
• A second bathroom where somebody occasionally washes their hands

Wrong for any shower. A 3 litre instant gives you well under a minute of hot water. People buy them for showers because ₹3,329 looks much better than ₹9,439, then use a bucket forever. The floor you live on changes the answer

This is the part most buying guides skip, and in Mumbai it matters.

Water heaters carry a pressure rating in bar. In a high-rise on pump-fed or hydro-pneumatic supply, incoming pressure can be several times what a ground-floor tap sees. A geyser under-rated for it fails at the tank — and a tank failure is the one fault that cannot be repaired on a service visit, only replaced.

• Above about the 10th floor, or on a pressurised system: insist on 8 bar. Every Venus storage geyser we list is 8 bar rated.
• Low-rise, gravity-fed: 6 bar is fine, which opens up the cheaper instant range.
• Check the pressure rating on the specification sheet, or ask us for it.

A geyser loses heat all day whether you use it or not. That standing loss is what the BEE star rating measures, and on a unit running daily for eight years it is the specification with the longest financial tail.

The Celo Vertical (ask the price on WhatsApp) range is 5-star. Most of the rest is 3-star. And the pricing is upside down in your favour — the 5-star 15 litre Celo Vertical is ₹8,129, while the 3-star 15 litre Slim is ₹10,059. You are being offered the more efficient unit for less money.

The only reason to take the 3-star Slim is that you need horizontal mounting and it fits where the vertical won't.

Horizontal vs vertical

Vertical performs slightly better — heat stratifies properly in a tall tank, so the water drawn off the top is hotter for longer. Buy horizontal only when the space demands it: above a false ceiling, inside a duct, or over a doorway.

The two are within a few hundred rupees (15 L vertical ₹8,129, horizontal ₹8,789), so this is a decision about your ceiling, not your budget.

What size does NOT depend on

• Wattage. 2000 W vs 3000 W changes how fast the tank reheats, not how much hot water you get. Size the tank first.
• Number of people in the flat, on its own. Two people who both shower need more than four who take bucket baths. Size by usage, not headcount.
• Winter. Colder inlet water means the tank works harder, but a correctly sized tank is correctly sized all year. If you are choosing 15 vs 25 litres and Mumbai winters are your worry, that is another argument for 25.
