Geyser Electricity Cost in India: Units per Bath, Worked Out
Heating a 25 litre geyser from 25°C to 55°C takes about 0.87 units of electricity - roughly ₹7-₹10 per tank, or ₹200-₹300 a month for one tank a day. Standing loss, 5-star ratings and heat pumps, worked through.

Short answer
Heating one 25 litre tank from 25°C to 55°C takes about 0.87 units (kWh) of electricity — roughly ₹7–₹10 at typical Indian tariffs. One tank a day costs around ₹200–₹300 a month; a family running a 25 litre geyser twice a day spends about twice that. On top of the heating, a geyser left switched on loses heat all day: on Jaquar's spec sheet the 5-star Briza 25 litre loses 0.465 units a day, about ₹100–₹140 a month. The three things that cut the bill are the right tank size, a 5-star tank, and switching it off when it is not needed.
In detail
The formula
Heating water takes 1.16 watt-hours per litre per degree Celsius. So:
units (kWh) = litres × temperature rise × 0.00116
The tariff columns are illustrations; Indian domestic tariffs vary by state and slab, so use the rate on your own bill. In winter, when the incoming water is colder, the rise — and the cost — goes up in proportion.
Standing loss: the cost of leaving it on
A storage geyser that stays switched on keeps topping itself up as heat escapes through the insulation. That loss is what the BEE star rating measures. Jaquar publishes it for the 5-star Briza range:
A lower-rated tank loses more, so the gap between a 5-star and an ordinary geyser shows up mainly for households that leave it on all day. If you switch it on twenty minutes before bathing and off afterwards, standing loss hardly matters and any geyser costs about the same to run.
What a heat pump changes
A heat pump moves heat from the air instead of making it, so it needs about a quarter of the electricity for the same hot water. Jaquar lists its Integra-X heat pumps at a COP of about 4.2. For 300 litres a day heated by 30°C (about 10.5 units of heat), that is roughly 2.5 units instead of 10.5 — around ₹2,400 a month saved at ₹10 a unit. Worked through in the Jaquar heat pump guide.
Five ways to a lower bill
- Size it right. A 25 litre tank for a shower, 15 for a bucket bath. A bigger tank costs more to keep hot. See the capacity guide.
- Buy 5-star if it stays on. Briza (₹8,550–₹11,650) is Jaquar's 5-star range; Venus's is Celo Vertical.
- Set the thermostat lower. 50–55°C is plenty for a bath; every degree above that is heat you pay for and then mix away with cold water.
- Switch it off. A timer or a habit of switching it off after bathing removes most of the standing loss.
- Keep pipes short. A geyser in the bathroom, close to the shower, wastes less hot water sitting in the pipe.

FAQ
How many units does a geyser use per day?
Heating a 25 litre tank by 30°C takes about 0.87 units (kWh); a 15 litre about 0.52. Add standing loss if it stays switched on - 0.465 units a day for Jaquar's 5-star Briza 25 litre.
How much does a geyser cost to run per month?
About ₹200-₹300 a month for one 25 litre tank a day at ₹8-₹11 a unit, plus roughly ₹100-₹140 if it is left on all day. Use the rate on your own bill; tariffs vary by state.
Does a 5 star geyser save electricity?
It saves on standing loss - the heat a hot tank loses while switched on. If you switch the geyser on only before bathing, any geyser costs about the same to run; if it stays on, a 5-star tank is worth having.
