Short answer
Buy storage for any bathroom with a shower, instant for a kitchen tap or a rarely-used second bathroom, and tankless only if your wiring can carry it. Instant costs ₹2,909–₹5,479 but holds 5 litres or less, so it cannot run a shower. Storage starts at ₹7,000 (a Jaquar Meta 6 litre) and is the right answer for most Indian homes. Tankless runs ₹6,819–₹36,289, gives unlimited hot water with no standing loss, and needs a dedicated 32 A circuit at minimum — or three-phase supply at the top of the range. The electrical requirement, not the price, is what rules tankless in or out.
In detail
The three types side by side
Instant: right for a small job, wrong for a shower
An instant geyser heats a litre or three very fast and holds nothing. That makes it excellent for a kitchen tap, a servant bathroom, or a guest bathroom used twice a month.
It cannot run a shower. A shower draws 8–12 litres a minute; a 3 litre tank is empty in seconds and then you are on the element's live output, which at 4.5 kW is a thin warm trickle, not a shower.
People buy instants for showers anyway, because ₹3,329 against ₹9,439 is a persuasive number. It is the most common expensive mistake in this category — you save about ₹6,000 once and take bucket baths for eight years.

Storage: the default, and usually the right one
A tank that heats and holds. Switch it on 20 minutes before you bathe, or leave it on a timer. Nothing about your wiring needs to change: 2000–3000 W runs on an ordinary 16 A geyser point, which every Indian bathroom already has.
The trade-off is standing loss — it leaks heat all day whether you use it or not. That is precisely what the BEE star rating measures, and it is why the star rating matters more than the wattage on a unit you will own for a decade.

Note the pricing oddity worth exploiting: the 5-star 15 L Celo Vertical (₹8,129) undercuts the 3-star 15 L Slim (₹10,059). Cheaper and more efficient. Take it unless you physically need the other shape.
Tankless: brilliant, if your wiring allows
A tankless heater has no tank. Water heats as it flows through, so you get unlimited hot water, instantly, with zero standing loss. On paper it wins on everything.
In practice the electrical supply decides. Because there is no tank storing energy over time, all the heating happens in the moment — which means a lot of kilowatts:
Every Quik unit also requires a neutral wire, which older Mumbai flats sometimes do not have at the bathroom point.
Read that table before you fall in love with the idea. A typical Mumbai flat has a single-phase connection and a 16 A geyser point — which means the entry Q55U already needs new cable and a new switch, and anything from the Q123 up needs a three-phase connection you almost certainly do not have. Three-phase is a separate application to your distribution company, not a wiring job.
Tankless is the right answer for a new build where you control the electricals, a villa, or a commercial installation. It is the wrong answer for a retrofit in an existing flat, however good the technology is.
So what should you actually buy?
- Bathroom with a shower → 25 L storage, 5-star, vertical. Celo Vertical 25 L, ₹9,439 (ask the price on WhatsApp), or Jaquar's 5-star Briza 25 L, ₹11,650 (ask the price on WhatsApp).
- Bathroom, bucket baths → 15 L storage, 5-star. ₹8,129.
- Kitchen sink → 6 L storage (₹7,319) or a 3 L instant (from ₹3,329). Instant if the sink is used briefly; 6 L if you wash up properly.
- Second/guest bathroom, occasional → 3 L instant, ₹3,329 (Venus Jiffy) or ₹4,200 (Jaquar Insta).
- False ceiling or duct only → Celo Horizontal, same capacity logic.
- Two bathrooms → two units, not one shared. Shorter pipe runs, less waiting, and redundancy.
- New build, you control the wiring → look seriously at tankless: Venus Quik or Jaquar Insta Prime.
- Existing flat, single phase → do not look at tankless.
One thing to check before any of this
Your building's water pressure. Venus rates these at 6, 8 or 10 bar, and every storage geyser we list is 8 bar. If you are high up in a pump-fed or hydro-pneumatic building, that rating matters more than the wattage — an under-rated unit fails at the tank, which is the one fault a service visit cannot repair. The 6 bar models are the instants and the larger Quik units. Jaquar rates its storage geysers at 8 bar where it states a figure, the Insta instants at 6.5 bar and the Verna floor-standing heaters at 10 bar.

Can an instant water heater run a shower?
No. An instant geyser holds 1-5 litres and a shower draws 8-12 litres a minute, so the tank empties in seconds and you are left with the element's live output - a thin warm trickle. Instants are right for a kitchen tap, a servant bathroom or an occasionally used guest bathroom. Buying one for a shower to save about ₹6,000 is the most common expensive mistake in this category.
Is a tankless water heater worth it in India?
Only if your electrical supply can carry it. Tankless gives unlimited hot water with no standing loss, but all the heating happens in the moment: the entry Venus Q55U at 5.5 kW needs a dedicated 32 A switch on 2.5 sq mm cable, and anything from the 12 kW Q123 up needs a three-phase connection. Every Quik unit also requires a neutral wire, which older Mumbai flats sometimes lack at the bathroom point. It is right for a new build where you control the electricals, and wrong for a retrofit in a single-phase flat.
What is the difference between instant and tankless?
An instant heater has a small 1-5 litre tank it heats quickly. A tankless heater has no tank at all and heats water as it flows through. Instant runs on ordinary wiring but gives you under a minute of hot water; tankless gives unlimited hot water but needs 5.5-24 kW and, above 9 kW, three-phase supply.
Vertical or horizontal geyser - which is better?
Vertical, slightly - heat stratifies properly in a tall tank so the water drawn off the top stays hotter longer. Choose horizontal only when the space demands it: above a false ceiling, inside a duct, or over a doorway. They are within a few hundred rupees of each other (15 L vertical ₹8,129 vs horizontal ₹8,789), so it is a decision about your ceiling, not your budget.
