The cheapest working thermostatic shower control is ₹6,644 — a ₹792 valve body (ALD-CHR-649C) plus a ₹5,852 chrome exposed parts kit. A thermostatic diverter that feeds two or three outlets runs ₹15,510–₹26,806 all in. It is the single best upgrade in an Indian bathroom with a geyser and a shared cold line, and close to pointless in a bathroom with a single cold supply. In detail
What it actually does
An ordinary mixer blends hot and cold in whatever ratio you set the lever to. If the cold pressure drops — someone opens a tap in the kitchen, the flush tank refills — the ratio changes and the water goes hot. If the geyser cycles, it goes cold.
A thermostatic mixer holds the temperature, not the ratio. A wax or bi-metallic element inside senses the outlet temperature and moves a piston to compensate, dozens of times a minute. Cold pressure drops, it throttles the hot to match. You feel nothing.
Two practical consequences:
No scald. Every Jaquar thermostatic cartridge has a safety stop, conventionally at 38°C, that needs a deliberate button press to go past. In a house with young children or elderly parents this is the reason to buy one, not the comfort.
No temperature hunting. You set 40°C once. Every shower after that starts at 40°C, immediately, without the thirty-second dance.
Thermostatic prices by type
The real entry price
Almost every thermostatic quote you will see is for the visible half only. The honest total is body plus kit:
₹6,644 is the number to remember. That is a genuine Jaquar thermostatic shower control, complete, in chrome. It is roughly what a good non-thermostatic single-lever concealed mixer costs, which makes the upgrade close to free in the right bathroom.

When it is worth it
You have a geyser feeding the shower and the cold line is shared with a WC, a basin or the kitchen. This is the standard Mumbai flat, and it is the exact condition thermostatic mixers were invented for.
Children or elderly parents use the bathroom. The 38°C stop is a safety device.
You have a diverter feeding two or three outlets. Switching from overhead to hand shower on a normal diverter usually shifts the temperature. A thermostatic one does not.
Instant/on-demand geyser. These are the worst offenders for temperature swing, because output temperature varies with flow. A thermostatic mixer is close to essential with one.
When it is not
Single cold supply, no geyser. There is nothing to mix. Buy a normal wall mixer and spend the money on the shower head.
Storage geyser, dedicated cold line, one outlet. A plain single-lever mixer is stable enough. The upgrade is real but small.
Very low pressure. Thermostatic cartridges need a working differential to regulate. Below about 0.5 bar many will hunt or shut down — and a thermostatic mixer that cannot hold temperature is worse than a plain one. Check your pressure first; see the flow rate guide and low water pressure showers.
This last one matters in Mumbai. If your bathroom is gravity-fed from a tank one floor up, do not buy thermostatic without talking to us first.
Aquamax, and which series carry it
Jaquar's thermostatic technology is branded Aquamax, and the valve bodies carry ALD- Aquamax codes regardless of which series you choose for the visible parts.
So you are not forced into a particular look. Pick the series for the bathroom and the thermostatic version of it will exist in most cases. Finishes run chrome (52), black chrome (48), black matt (48), stainless steel (32), antique bronze and antique copper (30 each).
The top of the range
ARC-ABR-87677 at ₹47,530 is a 2-way thermostatic bath tub filler in antique bronze — a freestanding-tub installation. The six thermostatic shower panels at ₹40,400–₹47,300 put valve, overhead, hand shower and body jets in one column, which is a sensible buy for a retrofit where you do not want to chase the wall.
For a normal flat, neither is necessary. A ₹6,644 thermostatic valve and a good shower head will outperform a ₹40,000 panel on a weak supply.
Living with one
- Set it once. Find your temperature, and stop moving the handle. That is the point of it.
- The 38°C stop is not a fault. Press the override button for hotter.
- Hard water is the enemy. Scale on the thermostatic element is the main failure mode in Mumbai, and it shows up as sluggish response, not leaks. See best Jaquar faucets for hard water.
- Service the filters. Thermostatic bodies have inlet strainers. A plumber who has never opened one will blame the cartridge.
