A complete Indian bathroom uses about thirteen distinct fittings, and most people only know the names of four of them. The four name confusions that cause real problems

1. Tap vs mixer. A tap has one inlet — one water source, no temperature control. A mixer has two inlets and blends hot and cold. If your bathroom has no hot line to the basin, a mixer is money spent on a lever you will never move. If it does, a tap will annoy you every winter. This one distinction separates a ₹1,900 purchase from a ₹7,150 one.

2. Mixer vs diverter. A mixer blends hot and cold. A diverter chooses which outlet the water goes to. A "2-way wall mixer" does both jobs in one wall-mounted body, which is why it is the default on Indian shower walls. A plain "2-way diverter" only switches outlets. 3. "Way" counts. 1-way, 2-way, 3-way, 4-way is the number of outlets the fitting can feed — not the number of handles, and not the number of water sources. Count the outlets on your wall: shower only is 1-way; overhead plus hand shower or spout is 2-way and covers most Indian bathrooms; three outlets needs 3-way. Extra ways you never use are wasted money.

4. Concealed trim vs concealed valve. A concealed fitting is two purchases: the visible trim (handle and plate) and the valve body buried in the wall. Buying the trim alone means nothing can be installed. This is the single most common ordering mistake we see — which Jaquar concealed valve do I need.

Grouped the way you will actually buy them

Printing that list and ticking it off is the simplest way to make sure a quote is complete. The items that go missing are almost always the angle valves, the concealed valve and the bottle trap.

Sanitaryware: the WC (also "commode", "water closet"), the wash basin (also "washbasin", "lavatory"), and the cistern (also "flush tank", "concealed cistern"). We are a fittings dealer and do not stock these. Buying sanitaryware from one brand and fittings from another is completely normal in India and creates no compatibility problem — the only thing to check is that the flush plate matches the concealed cistern you have.

Regional and colloquial names you may hear

Indian plumbers and quotes use a mixed vocabulary. These all appear on real quotations:

Bib cock / bib tap — a simple wall-mounted tap, usually WC-area or utility.
Pillar cock — a single-source tap standing on the basin.
Angle cock / stop cock — angle valve or stop valve.
Telephonic shower — hand shower.
Jet spray — health faucet.
Wall mixture — wall mixer (a spelling that appears constantly).
Shower rose — overhead shower head.
Divertor — diverter.
