Geyser Pressure Rating: 6 Bar vs 8 Bar, Which Do You Need?
Buy 8 bar above about the 10th floor, on a pump-fed or hydro-pneumatic supply, or if unsure. 6 bar suits low-rise gravity supply. Plus the safety valve.

Short answer
Buy an 8 bar geyser if you live above roughly the 10th floor, on a pump-fed or hydro-pneumatic supply, or whenever you are not sure. A 6 bar unit is fine in a low-rise building fed by gravity from an overhead tank. The rating is the highest water pressure the tank is built to work at. A tank rated below the pressure it sees fails, and a failed tank can only be replaced, not repaired. In practice the choice matters most for instant geysers. Every Jaquar and Venus storage geyser that publishes a rating is rated 8 bar or more, but most instant geysers are 6 or 6.5 bar. Whatever the rating, the safety valve that comes with the geyser must be fitted and never blocked.
In detail
What the rating means
Jaquar prints the figure as "working pressure" and Venus as "pressure rating". Both mean the most pressure the inner tank is designed to hold in daily use. For scale, every 10 metres of water above a tap adds about 1 bar. Our flow rate guide puts a gravity-fed flat at 0.2–1 bar and a pump-fed or hydro-pneumatic building at 2–3.5 bar.
So why do high-rise flats need 8 bar when the supply runs at 2–4 bar? Because the tank also has to take what happens on top of that:
- Pumps starting and stopping, and valves snapping shut. Both send short pressure spikes down the line.
- Height. In a tall tower fed from a rooftop tank, the lowest floors carry the whole column of water above them. Venus flags very high pressure on lower floors in buildings of 20 floors or more.
- Heating itself. Water expands as it heats. If a pump or pressure-reducing valve stops it flowing back up the inlet, pressure inside the tank rises until the safety valve opens. Venus explains this on its support page.
When you need 8 bar
"Low-rise" describes the building, not your floor. A ground-floor flat in a 25-storey tower can see more pressure than its top floor. If that's you, pick "Not sure" in the geyser size calculator. It shows the rating you need next to the litres.
To find out what your building runs, ask the society office or its plumber whether the supply is gravity-fed, pump-fed or hydro-pneumatic. A plumber can also screw a pressure gauge onto a tap and read it while the pump is running.
What fails if the rating is too low
- The safety valve runs constantly, even when the geyser is cold. Venus says this happens when a pump pushes beyond the geyser's rated 8 bar, and that the fix is to turn the pump's pressure setting down.
- Joints and fittings leak. Jaquar warns that high pressure can cause leaks or bursts.
- The tank gives way. The inner tank is the pressure vessel, and once it fails the whole unit is replaced. Our geyser warranty guide explains why the tank carries the longest cover.
The pressure release valve
Every storage geyser comes with a safety valve that fits on the cold-water inlet. Jaquar calls it a multi-function safety valve. Venus says its valve works as a pressure release, non-return, expansion and vacuum release valve in one.
- A slow drip while heating can be normal. If a pump or pressure-reducing valve sits on the inlet, Venus says the valve drips during heating and stops when heating stops. The fix is a thin PVC tube from the valve to the nearest drain.
- A steady flow, even when cold, is not normal. It means the supply is above the rating. Have a plumber or the society reduce it.
- Never remove, plug or cap the valve. Venus says tampering with it voids the warranty. Jaquar's warranty does not cover damage if the safety valve and a correctly rated MCB were not installed.
- Testing. Venus suggests lifting the valve's lever now and then, which should release a burst of hot water into the drain. Keep your hands clear. If nothing comes out, call service.
Before anyone works on the valve or the pipes, switch the geyser off at its MCB and close the inlet valve.
Which series are 6 bar and which are 8
The ratings are as each brand publishes them. Where Jaquar's spec sheet gives no figure, we don't guess one. If you want a Briza, a horizontal Elena or an Erica digital on a pumped supply, ask us to confirm the rating with Jaquar before you buy. For an instant geyser on a pumped supply, the Venus Brizo 3 litre (ask the price on WhatsApp) is the only 8 bar instant we sell: our price ₹4,209 against an MRP of ₹6,525, as of October 2026.
Size and pressure are best decided together. The capacity guide covers litres, and Jaquar vs Venus geyser compares the two brands size by size.

FAQ
Do I need a 6 bar or 8 bar geyser?
Buy an 8 bar geyser above roughly the 10th floor, on a pump-fed or hydro-pneumatic supply, or whenever you are not sure. A 6 bar unit is fine in a low-rise building fed by gravity from an overhead tank. On a low floor of a tall tower, buy 8 bar too.
What does a geyser's pressure rating mean?
It is the highest water pressure the inner tank is built to hold in daily use. Jaquar prints it as working pressure and Venus as pressure rating. A gravity-fed flat typically sees 0.2 to 1 bar and a pump-fed building 2 to 3.5 bar; an 8 bar rating leaves headroom for pump surges, valves snapping shut, height and the pressure rise as water heats.
What happens if a geyser's pressure rating is too low?
First the safety valve runs constantly, even when the geyser is cold; Venus says this happens when a pump pushes beyond the geyser's rated 8 bar. Joints can leak, and eventually the tank fails. A failed tank can only be replaced, not repaired.
Why does my geyser's safety valve drip while it heats?
If a pump or pressure-reducing valve sits on the inlet, heated water cannot expand back up the pipe, so the valve releases a little. Venus says this slow drip is normal, stops when heating stops, and should be piped to the nearest drain with a thin PVC tube. A steady flow even when the geyser is cold means the supply is above the rating. Never remove, plug or cap the valve.
Are Jaquar and Venus geysers 8 bar?
Every Jaquar and Venus storage geyser that publishes a rating is 8 bar or more. Jaquar does not publish one for the Briza, the horizontal Elena or the Erica 15 and 25 litre digital. Most instant geysers are 6 or 6.5 bar; the Venus Brizo 3 litre is the only 8 bar instant we sell.
