Diverter Leaking or Wall Mixer Dripping? Causes and Fixes

Most diverter leaks are a worn cartridge, O-ring or scale. Jaquar recommends up to 5 bar. What to check safely, when to call a plumber, and which spare.

Short answer

If a diverter or wall mixer drips from the spout or shower when it is off, or sends water to two outlets at once, the usual cause is a worn or scaled cartridge, washer or O-ring. That is a spare-part repair, not a new fitting. Water behind the wall plate or a damp patch on the wall points to the concealed body instead: the wrong body, the wrong depth or a leaking joint, and that needs a plumber. Pressure matters too: Jaquar's spec sheets put the top of the recommended range at 5 bar for its diverters. To order the right spare you need the model codes of both the visible trim and the body in the wall.

An overhead shower holds water in its arm and face, so a few minutes of dripping after you close the mixer is that water draining out. A drip that never stops is a leak.

The common causes

A worn cartridge or washer. Single-lever mixers and diverters seal with a ceramic cartridge, older screw-down taps with a rubber washer. Grit chips ceramic discs and rubber wears flat, so water creeps past a closed lever. Jaquar's warranty says faucets should be used with inline water filters and does not cover cartridge damage without one.

O-rings. The rubber rings around the spindle and inside the diverter harden with age and hot water. Worn spindle rings leak round the lever. A worn diverter seal lets the spout run while the shower is on, which is the classic drip on a wall mixer.

Scale. Hard-water deposits on the cartridge and diverter seat stop them closing fully; a stiff lever is the early warning. See faucets for hard water.

The wrong concealed body, or the wrong depth. Every concealed trim fits only the body Jaquar specifies for it. Most Jaquar 2-way normal-flow diverter trims sit on a body with a 40 mm cartridge, but the Continental Prime one sits on a 35 mm body, and a cartridge for one will not fit the other. The body must also sit at the right depth: too deep or too shallow, and the trim cannot seal against the tile, so water tracks behind the plate. Correcting either means opening the tiles. See which Jaquar concealed valve you need and the exposed parts kit guide.

Pressure. Jaquar's spec sheets recommend 0.5–5 bar for most of its diverter bodies and 0.2–5 bar for the Aquamax shower and thermostatic bodies. Above 5 bar the fitting runs outside that range, and seals and cartridges wear faster. Very low pressure causes a different nuisance on button diverters: the button can drop back and send water to the lower outlet, which is annoying but not a leak. Typical home pressures are in our flow rate guide.

What you can check safely yourself

If the fitting is under warranty, look but don't open it. Jaquar's warranty excludes repairs by anyone it has not authorised. Jaquar gives most of its diverters and concealed bodies a 10-year warranty, so check your invoice date first.

  1. Note where and when it leaks, using the table above. A drip that comes with the building pump and stops at night points to pressure.
  2. Work the lever gently to off and through each outlet a few times. Light scale sometimes stops a lever seating. Never force it.
  3. Check the easy joints. The hand-shower hose and wall outlet each have a rubber washer: hand-tighten them, or replace a flattened washer. A hose leak is often mistaken for a diverter leak.
  4. Ask your society whether the building runs a booster pump or has a pressure-reducing valve on your line.
  5. Isolate it if it is getting worse. Switch the geyser off at its switch or MCB, then close the bathroom's stop cock or the flat's main valve.

Don't pull out a cartridge without isolating the water, and don't run sealant round a leaking wall plate. Sealant hides the leak and traps the water inside the wall.

What needs a plumber or Jaquar service

  • Under warranty: call Jaquar service. The numbers are in our Jaquar customer care guide.
  • Out of warranty: a plumber can replace the cartridge or O-rings, provided the spare is genuine and matched by model code.
  • Water in the wall, a damp patch or stained grout: call a plumber now to pressure-test the concealed body.
  • Wrong body or wrong depth: rework, with the tiles off.
  • Pressure above 5 bar: a plumber can measure it with a gauge and fit a pressure-reducing valve on the bathroom line. If that valve also feeds the geyser, Venus explains that the geyser's safety valve will drip while it heats, and that the drip should be piped to a drain.

Find the model code before you order a spare

A concealed diverter has two codes: one for the visible trim and one for the body in the wall. The cartridge sits in the body, so the spare follows the body. Look on the GST invoice, the box, or the builder's handover papers; Jaquar codes read SERIES-FINISH-NUMBER, as our guide to reading a Jaquar model code shows. No paperwork? Photograph the lever, the plate and every outlet it feeds.

FAQ

Why is my diverter leaking from the spout when the shower is on?

Usually a worn diverter seal or O-ring, or scale on the diverter seat, which stops it closing fully. It is a spare-part repair by a plumber or Jaquar service, not a reason to replace the fitting.

Why does my wall mixer drip after I turn it off?

If it stops within a few minutes, it is water draining out of the shower arm and head, which is normal. A drip that never stops is a leak, usually a worn or scaled cartridge or washer.

Can I fix a leaking diverter myself?

You can check it safely: note where it leaks, work the lever gently, hand-tighten the hand-shower hose or replace a flattened washer, and isolate the water if it gets worse. If the fitting is under warranty, call Jaquar service instead of opening it, because Jaquar's warranty excludes repairs by anyone it has not authorised. Replacing a cartridge or O-rings is a plumber's job.

What water pressure does a Jaquar diverter need?

Jaquar's spec sheets recommend 0.5 to 5 bar for most of its diverter bodies and 0.2 to 5 bar for the Aquamax shower and thermostatic bodies. Above 5 bar, a plumber can measure the pressure with a gauge and fit a pressure-reducing valve on the bathroom line.

How do I find the model code to order a diverter spare?

Look on the GST invoice, the box or the builder's handover papers. A concealed diverter has two codes, one for the visible trim and one for the body in the wall, and the cartridge spare follows the body. With no paperwork, photograph the lever, the plate and every outlet it feeds.
